Athens centers on the Acropolis and its surrounding ancient sites, with a lively modern city and easy ferry access to the Greek islands for travelers extending their trip. It's also generally one of the more affordable Southern European capitals.
April-May and late September-October avoid both the intense summer heat and crowds. If you're also island-hopping, Athens works well as a start or end point given its port (Piraeus) and airport connections.
