Faro is the main gateway to Portugal's Algarve coast, with its own small walled old town plus easy access to the Ria Formosa lagoon nature reserve and the region's famous golden-cliff beaches at Praia da Marinha and Benagil Cave. Most visitors use it as an airport hub for the wider Algarve rather than staying in Faro itself.
May-June and September offer warm beach weather with lower prices and crowds than the July-August peak. Faro's old town, small and easily seen in half a day, is a worthwhile add-on if you're passing through en route to the coast.
