Gothenburg is Sweden's laid-back second city, built around a canal-lined center, a lively fish market hall, and easy access to a rugged archipelago of fishing villages just offshore. It's generally more affordable and less touristy than Stockholm.
June-August is best for the archipelago boat trips and outdoor cafes; the city is walkable and has an efficient tram network for the rest. Gothenburg also makes a reasonable pair-up with a Stockholm or Copenhagen trip via a scenic train ride.
