Slovenia's small, green capital centers on a car-free riverside old town beneath a hilltop castle, easily covered on foot in a day or two. It's also one of the best-positioned bases in Europe for a short trip that mixes a capital city with nearby mountains and lakes.
May-June and September offer mild weather for walking the riverside cafes and castle hill. Ljubljana is an easy day-trip base for Lake Bled (under an hour) or the Postojna Cave, making it a good anchor for a longer Slovenia itinerary.
