Split's Old Town is built directly into and around the ruins of Diocletian's Roman palace — a working neighborhood of cafes and shops inside a 1,700-year-old structure. It's also the main ferry hub for the central Dalmatian islands (Hvar, Brač, Vis), making it a natural base for island-hopping.

June and September offer warm swimming weather with fewer crowds than July-August, when ferries and hotels book up fast. Split's Riva waterfront promenade is the best spot for an evening walk with island views across the water.
